Tea Plantations In Munnar, Dams, Elephants, Echoes and State Borders

In the hills of Munnar, there are 36,000 tea estates and plantations. They were once all owned by the almight Tata Corporation, now many lots have been subdivided and privately owned.

The tea plantations of Munnar are mostly black tea. The leaves are harvested by men and women, not machines. Below, you’ll see the harvesters in the plantation, they are holding large scissors that cut the leaves and catch them into an attached bag – which later presumably gets bundled up into large bails.

You can scream at the top of your lungs and hear your own voice come back to you in several spooky echoes!

There are a few dams in the area, you can go jet boating for 600 rupees for a ten minute spin. We decided that it wasn’t a cheap thrill. Although at one of the dams, there’s a spot called Echo Point. You can scream at the top of your lungs and hear your own voice come back to you in several spooky echoes!

The photo below is a very popular filming location for Bollywood movies. Here they will use this spot for farmland or countryside settings. How lush is that green?

Check out the rolling hills of tea, there are how many acres? If you’ve forgotten, scroll to the top of this page. It takes years for the tea to grow and only one season to harvest it.

At the end of the road is the border between Kerala state and Tamil-Nadu state. The view from here is spectacular, overlooking greater Madurai and the world’s highest tea estate, Kollukumalai. At this height we are above the clouds!

To top it all off, I had like three coconuts to drink! These were the first (in all of India) that I had that tasted sweet, lucky me!

On the drive back home we spotted some wild elephants! Guess its not just humans that have a taste for good old English Breakfast. 🙂
