#ShortList : Seven Wonders Of The World
This is our first #ShortList on Sean in Shorts! And what better way to start than with the Seven Wonders of the World!
This is a list compiled by New7Wonders, an organisation that conducted a worldwide poll to decide on a new seven wonders, to replace the Ancient Wonders list.
The Great Pyramid of Giza, Egypt
First, the only surviving Wonder of the Ancient world and given honorary status in this list – The Great Pyramid of Giza. Its construction completed in 2560BC, in a time before modern engineering and technology, the wonder and mystery surrounding this monument is a testament to humankind.
The Great Wall of China, China
It is often said that it is the only man-made structure that can be seen from outer-space. Sure, it might not be true, but it truly is a mega-structure to behold. A wall is constructed to keep things in or keep things out – the same is true for the Great Wall, having defended the Chinese from invading Mongols from the North. With all sections of the wall considered, the total length measures 21,196 km (13,171 mi).
Petra, Jordan
The city of Petra is known for its architecture, cut directly from the rock, its buildings inside the mountain. The most recognised structure at Petra is the Al Khazneh, otherwise called The Treasury.
Colosseum, Italy
Celebrating the glory of ancient Rome, this great amphitheatre played host to popular bloodsports of the time – gladiators (munera), exotic animal fights (venatio), and public executions (ad bestias).

This ancient mountaintop city was built in the 15th century and abandoned a century later during the Spanish Conquest. It lay hidden above the Sacred Valley for several hundred years, until 1911 when it was discovered by an American historian, Hiram Bingham.

Taj Mahal, India
The Mogul Emperor, Shah Jahan constructed this beautiful mausoleum in memory of his first wife, Mumtaz Mahal. There are many optical illusions and tricks of the eye that play in to the grandness and striking symmetry of this house of the dead.
Cristo Redentor, Brazil
The enormous monument of Jesus Christ with open arms, stands 30m tall atop Corcovado Mountain, overlooking the city of Rio de Janeiro in the valley below. It is one of the most recently constructed Wonders, built in the 20th century.
