Rennes, Saint Malo and Maël

La ville principale de la région de Bretagne, c’est Rennes. C’est une grande ville qui est riche en histoire, architecture et culture.
Rennes is the capital city of the Brittanyregion. Its a large city, rich in history, architecture and culture.
Je suis arrivé en train et j’ai marché deux kilomètres à chez Maël, le hôte Couchsurfing. Quand je suis arrivé chez lui, mes vêtements étaient humide de la transpiration. Mais, Maël était trop sympa, il a fait beaucoup d’effort pour me faire confortable.
I arrived by train and walked all the way to Maël’s place, my Couchsurfing host. When I arrived, I was so sweaty, but Maël was heaps friendly, making a lot of effort to make me feel at home.
Il a prévu de faire un tour avec un guide à traver le Vieux Rennes. Sur le site-internet, il était marqué de ne pas devoir réserver une place. Quand on est arrivé au point de rendez-vous, en face de la Cathédrale de Saint Pierre, le guide nous a dit que c’était impératif de réserver une place, en fait elle était très impoli avec sa manière de nous parler. Il y avait des autres qui sont arrivés avec la même idée, mais le guide a encore refusé de prendre trop de gens.
He planned to join a guided tour of Vieux Rennes that night. On the website, it said no réservations were necessary. When we arrived at the meeting point in front of St Peter’s Cathedral, the guide told us that réservations were necessary or we couldn’t join, she was actually quite rude in the way she spoke to us. There were several others with the same impression as us, the guide still refused to take them.
Au lieu de rejoindre le tour, Maël et moi avons fait notre tour nous-même. On a trouvé des panneaux partout le Vieux Rennes, et pour s’entrainer un peu, il a traduit tout en anglais pour moi. Il y avait un grand incendie en 1720.
Instead of the tour, we made our own. We found historic signs posted everywhere through Vieux Rennes, and to practice our language skills, Maël translated the signs into English for me. There was a great fire in 1720.
On a bu une boisson, un embuscade. C’est un mélange de la bière, du vin blanc, un trait de calvados et un trait d’un autre alcool fort. La boisson n’avait pas le goût d’alcool, et je crois que c’est dangereux pour des jeunes qui n’ont pas encore experimenté les effets d’alcool.
We had a drink, an Embuscade. Its a mix of beer, white wine, a shot of Calvados and another shot of spirit. The drink didn’t taste like alcohol, so might be quite dangerous for someone not used to drinking.
Le lendemain, on a visité la ville de Saint Malo. O mon dieu ! La mer, le sable, le soleil, une grande muraille, les vieux bâtiments. Ils y sont tous !
The next day, we visited St Malo. Oh my god ! The sea, the sand, the sun, the great wall and the old buildings. It was all there !
Il y avait une île qui était séparé du continent par la mer. La marée est descendu et un petit chemin nous a laissé traverser. On a mangé notre déjeuner sur l’île, des sandwichs, un pacquet de chips, et un kougn-amann qui est un pâtisserie très typique de la Bretagne.
There was a small Island separated from the Mainland by the sea. The tide went down and revealed a narrow path to cross over. We had our lunch there, sandwiches, chips, and a kougn-amann(a buttery pastry, typical of Brittany).
Nous avons marché sur le sable et à travers l’eau, mais le sable est devenu trop brut et ils faisaient très mal aux pieds.
We walked along the beach on the sand, through the water, but the sand became very coarse and hurt our feet.
Le soir, un ami de Maël nous a rejoint. On est sorti au centre ville pour danser les danses traditionnelles de la Bretagne. Les instruments étaient d’un sort celtique et la musique était douce. Pour moi, elle m’a fait penser du thème musique du jeu vidéo : Tetris.
That night, Maël’s friend joined us. We all went out to the city centre to try out a traditional dance of Brittany. The instruments were sort of Celtic and the music was quite soft. It made me think of the theme song for Tetris.
Il y avait un cercle, un par un, nous avons rejoint le cercle tout en liant nos auriculaires. La danse était assez simple, un type de pas vine. Ça m’a beaucoup plait !
